Acute Care Hospital Departments

Hospital

Hospitals provide emergency, outpatient and inpatient care. Because hospitals provide a wide range of services to their patient, there are many departments providing these services to patients. Many hospitals provide everything from surgery to physical therapy, and as part of this patient care, must provide pharmacy services, nursing care, housekeeping and more.

Because of this wide range of necessary services, there are many uses for plastic bags in the hospital setting. Just some of these uses can involve the storage, protection and transport of items like:

  • regular trash disposal
  • contaminated and/or soiled bedding and clothing
  • infectious waste disposal
  • medical devices and equipment
  • medications
  • clinical specimens

In addition to our vast selection of general use poly bags, Elkay Plastics has many specialty bags designed for specific applications within the Healthcare industry. These items are designed, printed and color-coded (where applicable) within standard industry accepted configurations, so you know that Elkay bags can be used without disrupting normal practices in the hospital. Naturally, our bags for the Healthcare field are made only from virgin resins so they meet FDA guidelines, and they contain no latex. The list below indicates the various hospital departments using poly bags.

About GPO Contracts

GPO (Group Purchasing Organization) contracts similar to a buying group that a hospital joins in order to take advantage of larger bulk purchasing power. While GPO contracts offer significant price savings to the hospital and limit the items and pricing that an independent distributor can sell to the Hospital, there are a number of items that are not typically covered by GPO contracts. This training will help the DSR to see where these non-GPO opportunities typically are within the hospital environment, but because there are some variations with every contract and hospital, it's best to ask the individual hospital what their particular policies are.
